Student Spotlight
Brittany Harris - School of Pharmacy - Ghana 2012
My name is Brittany Harris and I am a first year pharmacy student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. I am a Jersey girl who has fallen in love with Maryland, my home away from home. Pharmacy appeals to me because it offers me the opportunity to help others to feel better when they are ill. Ever since I traveled to Ecuador and spent a night in an indigenous village with no electricity or running water, I decided that I wanted to give back to those abroad who could use my help. I have a passion for traveling and for helping others. In July, I will be going to Ghana to work with the Ghana Health & Education Initiative. Two years ago, this wonderful organization that works to foster sustainability in Ghana distributed 2,000+ bed nets to villagers in Humjibre and some of the surrounding areas where malaria is a threat. This summer, myself, along with 7 other individuals will be going door to door with community health workers to see whether the recipients of the bed nets have been using them, have contracted the disease and also to reiterate the importance of bed net usage in the fight against malaria. Simply sleeping under a bug net can prevent 15-30% of infant deaths due to malaria. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn a bit about me. Brittany

OPPORTUNITY FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
Volunteer Healthcare Corps
In late 2004, AIHA established the HRSA‐funded HIV/AIDS Twinning Center to support PEPFAR objectives to build sustainable institutional and human resource capacity in target countries overseas.
The Volunteer Healthcare Corps (VHC) is a distinct yet complementary component of the Twinning Center’s institutional partnership program. It is designed to rapidly expand the pool of trained providers, managers, and allied health staff delivering quality healthcare services—including care to people living with HIV/AIDS—by providing opportunities for skilled professionals from various fields to serve the cause of global health by volunteering their time and expertise. Flexible and dynamic in nature, the VHC works to tailor assignments to the unique skill set of each volunteer, thereby maximizing the benefits on both sides.
For more information, see the VHC website.
